State of the HIV epidemic in Mexico
The HIV epidemic in Mexico is classified as concentrated as it has not been established in the general population, but rather in key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM), injecting drug users (IDUs); male sex workers (MSW) and, to a lesser degree, in female sex workers (FSW) and people deprived of their liberty (PDL). According to the UNAIDS Spectrum 4.47 model, the estimated 2011 prevalence of HIV infection among the adult population aged 15-49 ranged from 0.24 to 0.30%, taking into account the upper bound of the plausibility analysis provided by the model with a punctual estimator of 0.24%. This indicator shows a downward trend in prevalence over the last years.3 According to this model, in 2011 there were between [169,443 and 213,363] ? living in the country based on the upper bound of the plausibility analysis, with a punctual estimator of 169,443 adults and children.
In key populations, the prevalence of HIV infection has historically remained above 5% in MSM, IDU and MSW. Observational data indicate that in 2011 the prevalence of HIV in MSM was 16.99%, followed by MSW (18.24%), IDUs, (7.0%), and lastly FSW (0.63%).
