State of HIV in Paraguay
The epidemic de HIV and AIDS in Paraguay is characterized by being concentrated among the most vulnerable and highest risk groups such as men who have sex with men, the transgender population, sexual worker and their clients, and drug users.
Since the onset of the epidemic in Paraguay in 1985 up to December 2010, 8,917 people have been notified with HIV, of which 2,955 are registered as people with AIDS. The total number of deceased is 1,238. In 2010, a total of 1,097 people were notified with HIV.
The transmission category of new diagnoses in 2010 is based on the baseline of people receiving counseling prior to testing and the notification forms. Data was obtained in 55% of the total number of records. According to the available data, sexual transmission accounted for 97% of cases, perinatal for 2%, and contact with contaminated blood and fluids for 1%.
