Uruguay

State of the HIV epidemic in Uruguay

In Uruguay the epidemic is concentrated (prevalence in the general population is less than 1% and greater than 5% in the most-at-risk populations such as transgender people, sex workers, drug users, men who have sex with men, and people deprived of their liberty). The cumulative number of HIV and AIDS cases from 1983 to 2010 stood at 13,979. The reporting rate of HIV cases continues to grow slowly and steadily, reaching 25.56 per hundred thousand inhabitants in 2010.

The reporting rate of AIDS cases stood at 7.36 per hundred thousand inhabitants, remaining stable since 2008. The cumulative number of deaths as of December 2010 was 2,489. Mortality due to AIDS increased steadily until 2005, and since then has remained practically constant with an AIDS-specific mortality rate of 5 per hundred thousand inhabitants. The male-female ratio declined steadily over the last 10 years, remaining at approximately 2:1 (in 2010: 1.3 for HIV and 2.4 for AIDS). There is a predominance of HIV cases within the 24 to 34 age group, while AIDS cases are predominant in the 35 to 44 age group. Sexual transmission is the predominant and increasing mode of transmission. The HIV infection rate per 10,000 live births has shown a steady reduction, standing at 0.85 in 2010. However, the vertical transmission rate in the public sector stood at 6.6% in 2010, which is 3 times over the desirable rate.

By geographic distribution, the highest rate of reported cases is concentrated in Montevideo (with 74% of all reported cases), followed by a few departments bordering Brazil (Artigas and Rivera) and those with higher tourist activity (Maldonado and Rocha).
