State of HIV in Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, the first case of HIV was reported in 1987. Up to 2011, the epidemiological behavior of the epidemic in the country was low level and concentrated. At present, the prevalence in the general population and expectant mothers does not exceed 1% and remains stable in groups with risky behavior. In a concentrated HIV epidemic, there is still a possibility to focus prevention, treatment, care, and support efforts on the populations most affected by HIV, while recognizing that no subpopulation is completely isolated.
Until 2011, a total of 6,864 people were affected by HIV, of whom 5,177 were HIV-positive, 695 were cases, and 941 have deceased. The prevalence rate was 1001 and the incidence rate 19.88. According to sex, 34.5% (2,305) were women and 65.5% (4,379) men, with a male-female ratio of 1.89: 1 (i.e., 1.89 infected men for every infected woman). There was a prevalence of 7.5% in MSM, 3.2% in sexual workers, 0.05% in pregnant women, 0.114% within the 15-24 years age group, 1.32% in men, and 0.1% in women, with a national prevalence of less than 1%.
